Movie Review: Thomas and The Magic Railroad

Happy February 2nd everyone. For this Thursday's thought topic, I was thinking about sharing my thoughts about "Thomas and the Magic Railroad". I saw the movie when I was younger on DVD like lots of others did but a few years (like somewhere between 2003-2005) after its initial release in July 2000.

I figured this would be a good time to share my thoughts since the 20th Anniversary edition of the original "Thomas and the Magic Railroad" movie came out in 2020 after 20 years after the original release in 2000 of Thomas and the Magic Railroad.

First Couple of notes before we start

  1. THESE ARE SOLEY MY OWN OPINIONS AND NOT FROM THE THOMAS & FRIENDS FAN BASE

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First off before I go into details backing my main thought, I first want to say that "Thomas and The Magic Railroad" was a wonderful movie when I was a child and certainly agreed with the fact that even though there were issues that other viewers have noticed. But in my opinion, I think that as a theatrical movie, it was a first attempt to bring the Thomas universe from animated to the movie theater. With that, I want to point out what I like, dislike and what I thought were funny moments from the film below, but like pervious stated, "The following are solely my own opinion."

So with that said, lets get into the details:

What I like about Thomas and the Magic Railroad?

  1.  Love the opening to the movie with Mr. Conductor doing the narrating
  2. Like the transition from Thomas universe to Shining Time with the introduction from Mr. Conductor
  3. Like all the characters except Burnett Stone
  4. Like the two minor plotlines along with the one major plotline (What I though were the plotlines)
    1. Minor plotline #1: Finding more gold dust (Mr. Conductor & Junior)
    2. Minor plotline #2: Mystery of Lady & getter her working (Burnett Stone)
    3. MAJOR PLOTLINE: Destroying Lady & the magic railroad (Diesel 10's plot)
  5. Like how they put Thomas and the Magic Railroad between Season 5 and Season 6 of Thomas and Friends TV show.

What I dislike about Thomas and the Magic Railroad?

  1. Better usage of Burnett Stone
    1. Reason is that is seemed Burnett Stone seem to not care a bit about his granddaughter Lily Stone and only cared about getting his engine Lily working.
    2. He is good fit in the plotline but could've been use a bit better in my opinion.
  2. Bit confused on the scene where Thomas agreed to help Lily Stone, he uncouples from Annie & Clarabel leaving them where they were currently sitting as Thomas set off to being Lily Stone home.

What I though were funny moments from Thomas and the Magic Railroad?

  1. Mr. Conductor in Sir Topham's office before getting a phone call from him
    1. Trying on the Topham and getting scared after looking at the portraits of Sir Topham & Lady Hatts
  2. Seeing Mr. Conductor sleeping in Tidmouth Shed with Thomas sleeping next to him
  3. Watching Mr. Conductor threating Diesel 10 with a bag of sugar after relizing he still had no gold dust
  4. Mr. Conductor talking with a flower telephone which made me laugh after seeing that portion of the film
Another point that I wanted to share was that with the Billy Twofeathers operating a steam train turns out to be the Strasburg Railroad NW #475 steam locomotive and two passenger car from Strasburg railroad in Pennsylvania, United States

In conclusion, even with the points I made above I still loved the movie when I watched it as a kid. Even though most points that I previously mention, were ones that I pointed out, most viewers wouldn't have notice. Reason is that as younger generations watching the show would watch just to see Thomas and his friends that still love the film despite the results at the box office showing a different side to the story. But overall as a Thomas and Friend kid, I really really love the film and it fit in the timeline between Thomas and Friends Season 5 with what they were doing with the show before the film release and what they did in Thomas and Friends season 6.
